Reasons for Performing a Short Circuit Study
According to NFPA 70E-2015, the following are four important reasons to perform a short circuit study:
1. Verify electrical equipment is properly rated to withstand the available fault current it could see.
2. Verify overcurrent protection is properly rated to safely interrupt the available fault current.
3. Equipment is required to have sufficient interrupting capability according to National Electric Code.
4. Available fault current from the utility could increase or main service transformer could be increased resulting in higher fault currents causing equipment to be inadequately rated
